A new report published this week by the International Women’s Media Foundation details the types of violence and threats faced by many women working in news media around the world. Nearly two-thirds of respondents in an international survey on women in news media said they had experienced intimidation, abuse and even death threats because of their work.
Most respondents cited psychological effects from sexual violence and harassment. Some quit their news organizations or left the country where they were working. Others talked of fear, anxiety and depression.
