Afghanistan’s top female police officer in the Helmand province was shot dead as she left her home this week. Islam Bibi was a 37-year-old mother of three who had been a role model for other women, even as she faced threats from extremists and her own family for her work. “Firstly I needed the money, but secondly I love my country,” she said in April. “I feel proud wearing the uniform and I want to try to make Afghanistan a better and stronger country.”
