“If rape happens in Delhi, everyone gets excited,” says Abhilasha Kumari, director of Apne Aap Woman Worldwide. “But these women are raped every day,” she says of the country’s prostitutes.
One such woman is Rani, who cooks and cleans for her six children and husband during the day, and has sex with as many as five men per night. She has been prostituted by her husband since she was 19. Rani is a member of the Perna community, where intergenerational prostitution is routine, and the women betray their true feelings when they emphatically declare that they would never let their daughters go into sex work.
